Amir’s New Record – Most Tests Without a Catch

Pakistan quick Mohammad Amir has now played 18 Test matches without taking a single catch.

The left-hand bowler broke a new record during the Pakistan tour to England this summer, but this record is not something he can brag about. He hasn’t taken a catch from the start of his career and during this summer English tour, the youngster extended his streak to 18 Test matches.

The 24 year old is an exception bowler of Pakistan as he has bagged 63 wickets at the longest format of the gameregardless of not taking any catch. He has an impressive bowling average of 31.63 and a superb economy rate of 3.11. In the England tour of Pakistan, the youngster picked up three wickets at Lord’s and Old Trafford while claiming four wickets at Edgbaston. Amir also grabbed two wickets in the final English summer Test at The Oval.

English opener Geoff Pullar was the last shy player who held the record for most Tests without grabbing a catch. He was catch-less for 16 matches from the start of his career in 1959. Pullar finally got the breakthrough catch in Lahore in 1961-62 when he caught the ball off Mushtaq Mohammad’s knock.

The Australian pacer Peter Siddle also recently broke a similar record. Since hanging on to RanganaHerath’s loft in Sydney at the start of 2013, Siddle has been catch-less for 24 matches. As a result he broke the record for most Test matches without a catch in mid-career.

The previous record holder was also an English opener Peter Richardson. He caught the ball off Australian skipper Ian Johnson in his third Test at Headingley in 1956 and then went on to play 23 Test matches catch-less. Richardson finally claimed the catch of Ramakant Desai of India at Mumbai after five years.

The Australian left-arm spinner Chuck Fleetwood Smith in 1930s and two recently retired bowlers Jayananda Warnaweera of Sri Lanka and India’s Abey Kuruvilla completed their career without taking any catch from the 10 Test matches they were part of.
