Mehdi following debutants footsteps: Stats Analysis 1st day Eng Vs Ban

England is facing Bangladesh in the opening Test at Chittagong. Following are the stats highlights from the first day of the Test: Mehdi Hasan continued the debutants trend after registering five-wicket haul on his Test debut. He has become the seventh Bengali star to achieve the feat. Four of such instances have occurred from past five years. Mustering it further, no other teams have more than five debutants who picked up five wickets in their first Test.

Mehdi is just 18 year old and only one younger bowler from his side has accomplished this achievement. Enam Ul Haque jolted down three five-wicket hauls at a younger age than Mehdi 11 years ago. Overall, he is the fourth youngest bowler to record five Test scalps on his debut.

Jonny Bairstow has become the first player in cricket history to hammer 1000 or more runs while batting at number six or below. The previous best at this position was 984 by VVS Laxman 14 years ago. The England wicketkeeper-batsman is also the first player to bag 1000 Test runs in 2016.

The England opening three wickets could only manage 21 runs which are the lowest by their side in Tests in Asia. In 2007-08 England recorded their previous lowest tally off by opening three wickets in Galle. However, the following four wickets recorded brilliant partnerships and England ended the day at 258 for 7.

Moeen Ali also unleashed his skills at Chittagong. He recorded his best of 68 in Tests outside England. After jolting down his third half-century in away Tests, the star improved his average of 23.85. However, Moeen has an amazing home average of 40.96 after hammering three tons and five fifties.

Gareth Batty returned to England squad after 11 years. He last featured for the side in June 2005 also against the same opponents. He has missed 142 Tests during this span and it is most by any comeback player. The England skipper Alastair Cook was playing his 134th Test match and ultimately he became the most capped player in England. Alec Stewart was England’s previous most capped player with 133 Tests since 2002. Bangladesh featured three debutants in this clash. They last featured three or more debutants in Dunedin against New Zealand eight years ago.
