Sunil Narine returns to WI ODI squad

Sunil Narine returns with new action

Sunil Narine is finally back in the West Indies ODI squad after a lengthy absense. Narine’s absense has already proved very costly for the Caribbean men who have failed to put in any significant performances in the calendar year. The spin wizard has got his name included in the West Indies squad for their tour of Sri Lanka which is to be played this month.

Narine hasn’t featured in an international match ever since his bowling action was questioned during the 2014 champions league T20. Playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in that tournament, Narine was barred from playing in the final because of a suspected wrong action. He began working on his rehabiliation soon after and was included in the World Cup squad. However, he pulled out of that tournament to practice more on his redeveloped bowling action. He returned to playing competitive cricket in the 2015 IPL season, but was suspected yet again for a faulty action. He was given one last warning, although any sanctions during club competitions like IPL and CLT20 do not apply to international cricket.

The whole West Indies squad is kind of refurbished. The selectors seem to have dropped a number of players, particularly those who didn’t perform well in the World Cup downunder. The West Indians struggled in the group stages of the tournament, and although they did make it through that round, they were beaten quite comprehensively by co hosts New Zealand in the knockout stages.

Allrounders Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy

Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons, Sulieman Benn, Sheldon Cottrell, Nikita Miller, Kemar Roach and Dwayne Smith have been left out of the One Day squad. Smith managed to make just 93 runs in the whole World Cup and hardly featured as a bowler in the tournament. Simmons scored a decent 173 in 5 innings, of which 102 came in a single match against Ireland, which the Caribbean lost eventually. Star allrounder Chris Gayle has been ruled out of both the T20 and the ODI series due to a back problem. Both Sammy and Simmons, in addition to being left out of the One Day squads, have been ommitted from the T20 lineup too. Sammy had a fairly average world cup, picking up just 1 wicket in 28 overs with the bowl, and scoring at an average of just over 30 with the bat. Paceman Kemar Roach featured for the Caribbean men in just 3 World Cup games, in which he didn’t impress much, picking up just a single wicket at a run rate of 6.8 per over. Spinner Sulieman Benn too wasn’t too productive as he managed just 2 wickets in 3 games, conceding runs at an average of 6.3 per over.

Darren Bravo

Devendra Bishoo, Carlos Brathwaite, Jermaine Blackwood, Andre Fletcher, Ravi Rampaul and Jason Mohammed earn a place in the squad. Star batsman Darren Bravo and Sunil Narine who weren’t a part of the World Cup squad, make their much awaited return to the international fold. Bravo in addition to being part of the One Day squad, will also feature in the T20s. The One Day situation of Dwayne Bravo and Kieron still remains unsolved. Yet again they find themselves dropped from the One Day squad, as revealed by coach Phil Simmons earlier. Simmons was later suspended as West Indies coach because of making remarks about outside interfernce in the squad selection. Both Bravo and Pollard, however, make it to the T20 squad. Fast bowler Ravi Rampaul makes his return to the international scene for the first time since mid 2014. He was in the squad for West Indies tour of India 2014, but the tour ended in abrupt fashion as the Caribbean men pulled out of it.
