Inzamam appointed Afghanistan coach

Afghan job for Inzi

Inzamam Ul Haq has been appointed Afghanistan cricket team’s head coach. The announcment of the Afghan Cricket Board hiring the legendary Pakistan bastman sparks massive hype from both sides of the border. Although, the contract that has been signed will see Inzi’s appointment only till the end of the tour of Zimbabwe, the CEO of the Afghan Cricket board, Shafiq Stanikzai cofirmed. Though he also belives that the contract has every possibility to be extended for upto two years, depending on how well the team performes. The last time Inzi was given a coaching role was back in 2012-13, which was a brief period of him acting as Pakistan’s batting consultant.

While having a chat with ESPNcricinfo, Stanikzai said:

“Inzamam’s reign as Afghan coach is currently fixed for the Zimbabwe tour only and then we will be having a few meetings in Zimbabwe and after that we will be deciding, on mutual agreement, for the longer term,”

Sridharan Siram, a former Indian batsman was also being considered by the Afghanistan board for the coaching job. Siram was also Australia A’s batting consultant during their recently concluded India tour. He was all set to do the same job for the Australian senior side during their tour to Bangladesh, which has now been cancelled.

Inzamam had also been in line for the batting coach role in the Pakistan cricket team for quite some time now. Negotiations and rumors had been on song for almost three years, but the former World Cup winner and captain now finds himself with a new challenge, one which Im sure he will greatly look forward to. Many belive that the reason for the Pakistan Cricket Board not appointing Inzamam was their restriction of the coach having atleast Level 3 coaching accreditation and experience of several years at the top level.
It is for sure that all Inzi fans would be dearly excited and eager to see how their idol and legend does as the head coach of a potentially talented Afghanistan side. The Afghanistan players showed put on show some memorable displays in last year’s T20 World Cup and also in this year’s One Day World Championship. A good and experienced coach would certainly help them get nourished and polished individually and as a unit.

Ever since hanging his boots in 2007, Inzamam has hardly gotten himself featured in any cricketing activities. According to close sources, the legendary batsman had been busy with maintaining his business ventures and in conducting religious activities. How he will do as coach with the Afghan team is a question that will surely be brought up. As a batsman, in his prime, he was world class and there will never be another Inzamam for sure. He was also a fearless and aggressive character, one who was just focused on his game, and nothing else.
