WATCH: Hasan Ali’s controversial catch against Kent sparks debate in the cricketing fraternity

Pakistan started their England tour on a high with a thumping win over County side Kent in a 50-overs match played at the Kent County Cricket Ground, Beckenham. Pakistan scored 358 runs batting first for the loss of seven wickets and restricted Kent to 258 runs in the chase thus registering a 100-run victory.

The tour match wasn’t without its own drama, as Pakistani fast bowler Hasan Ali was accused of claiming a dubious catch of his own bowling. Ali picked up two wickets in the game as Pakistan defeated Kent comprehensively by 100 runs in the 50-over match. Ali however came under the scanner for claiming a dubious catch in the game when he claimed a caught and bowled decision against batsman Alex Blake in the 30th over of Kent innings.

Alex Blake had struck an amazing 89 off 48 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes after the top order failed to give a rousing start to Kent’s chase of 359 runs. It all happened when Blake top-edged one a short ball from Ali having him the easiest of return catches. It was always going to be an easy catch but the pacer momentarily held on to the ball before letting it slip away in the middle of his celebration.

As per ICC’s law 33.3, a catch is completed only after “a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his own movement.” This wasn’t the case, as Ali let the ball slip the moment he caught it before going in for the celebration. The soft signal was out and Blake had already started walking away even before the catch was taken.

OG Robinson, who was on the non-striker’s end, protested against the decision but to no avail. Blake was dismissed for a score of 89 runs off just 48 balls. After his departure, Kent’s middle order succumbed under pressure as Pakistani bowlers bundled them out for 258 runs in 44.1 overs. Earlier, Pakistan posted a staggering 358 runs on the board in fifty overs riding on Imad Wasim’s century and fifties from Fakhar Zaman and Haris Sohail.
