West Indies have moved to the top in the latest ICC T20 rankings, following Sri Lanka’s drubbing against New Zealand.
West Indies cricket has arguably experienced the most troublesome of periods among all cricket giants in recent times. Though, the Caribbean men now seem to have something to cheer for, thanks to their Sri Lankan counterparts from the Middle East. Sri Lanka were outclassed in every department against New Zealand down-under. First they were whitewashed in the Test series, then beaten 3-1 in the ODI series.
Following that, the Sri Lankan team put up a great show in the first T20, but a confident New Zealand side somehow managed to get over the line. The Lankans were in danger of losing their top spot in the T20 rankings, and they had just one T20 game to save it. Heading into a do or die situation in the last T20 and the final match of their New Zealand tour, the visitors experienced a total crash in all aspects of the game. Their batsmen never took off, and their bowlers were mauled all over the park.
The kiwis gunned down Sri Lanka’s target in just 10 overs, and with that, the ICC T20 rankings look completely refurbished. The West Indies and Australia move a place up each, the Caribbean men 1st and the Kangaroos 2nd. New Zealand move above India, with their impressive 2-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka, while England, South Africa and Pakistan retain their positions as 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.
