Both New Zealand and visitors Pakistan will have a chance each to earn the no.1 spot in the ICC T20 rankings, following their 3 match T20 series which kicks off from Friday, January 15.
Following their convincing 2-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka in teh 2 match T20 series, New Zealand jumped up a few places, tied with Pakistan at 114 points. As things stand in the ICC T20 rankings points table, Pakistan and New Zealand jump straight to the top of the rankings, in case of a whitewash by either side.
The team that wins all 3 games will finish January as the no.1 T20 side. On the other hand, the losing side would drop to the 8th position. Another scenario is a 2-1 series win for either side. In that case, the winning side would leapfrog South Africa into 5th position.
The ICC T20I championship is an extremely tight affair as of now, with no real guarantees of which teams would end up where, with the World T20 looming around the corner. Only 8 points separate the top 8 sides in the T20 rankings. There are a number of T20 tournaments in the build up to the mega event in India, which means increases likelihood of some reshuffling at the top of the T20 rankings.
