Ben Foakes Pulls off an Outstanding yet Controversial Stumping – Watch

England wicket-keeper Ben Foakes pulled off an outstanding yet debatable stumping during the one-off ODI against Ireland at Dublin on May 3 (Friday). The top-ranked ODI side eventually won the match by four wickets and three overs to spare.

Meanwhile, the umpires had to reduce the match to 45 overs due to wet outfield and the visiting team asked Ireland to bat first. Paul Stirling and skipper William Porterfield added a 50-run stand for the first wicket before Tom Curran provided the first breakthrough dismissing Stirling (33). Porterfield went back in the next over and England started to chip in with wickets at regular intervals. The visitors three more wickets in quick succession to have Ireland at 110 for five before a controversial stumping caused an uproar at Dublin.

Joe Denly bowled a fair delivery to Andy Balbirnie and Ben Foakes did a clever bit of wicket-keeping as he waited and waited and when Balbirnie lifted his heel momentarily, he was quick to whip the bails off. It was very smart from Foakes when Denly bowled the ball well down the leg-side as Balbirnie was looking to sweep and missed. All looked innocuous at that moment and Foakes kept looking at the back-foot of the batsman. Balbirnie just lifted it for a moment as he dragged back in and that was enough time for Foakes to break the stumps.

The action from Ben Foakes raised speculations and many even compare this act with Ravichandran Ashwin’s mankading Jos Buttler in IPL 2019. The fans termed the act as against the spirit of the game and created a ruckus on social media. However, going by the MCC’s rule it was well within the rule book and there was no deliberate deception.
