Jayawardene to benefit England against spin?

Three Lions desperate to contain spin

After the England batsman endured a horrible series against Pakistan back in 2012, it is quite clear that they need some serious guidance and practice to play spin bowling. The visitors were destroyed in the United Arab Emirates 3 years back, as the Pakistani slow bowlers absolutely mauled the batsman with their spin magic.

Jayawardene

Mahela talks to the media about his new England role

In early August, the English cricket Board confirmed that they had appointed Sri Lankan maestro Mahela Jayawardene as a batting consultant for the UAE Test series against Pakistan. The series which is to be played this month, will see visitors England take on a Pakistan side filled yet again with some promising spinners, the most notable one being Yasir Shah.

Jayawardene, the perfect fit for England

Jayawardene hung his boots and retired from International cricket after the world cup. His illustrious career spanned over 18 years, which included 149 Test matches and 449 ODIs. Those who know Jayawardene would very well know that what he showcased throughout his career was an overall gifted player who was a beast against spin bowling. Jayawardene was a maestro against the slower bowlers of the game, and his appointment as England’s batting consultant would be welcomed both by the players and the fans. For a young English side full of talent and flare, they needed a mentor who could guide them, especially in the spin playing department. One area where the English batsmen seriously needed assistance, practice and tips is when playing spin. Jayawardene can provide them with just that.

Sometimes in cricket, a team can be full of flare and quality, but it may still be lacking a couple very important traits to their game. At this moment in time, the young Englishmen seem desperate to add a new weapon to their game, which is to play well against spin.

One can argue with the fact that Jayawardene has had very little experience on UAE pitches, but to the 38 year old legend’s defense, he falls behind Sachin Tendulkar in the second place for the most number of Tests played in Asia. These figures are massive and show what sort of experience Jayawardene carries along with him. Having played 109 Test matches in the subcontinent, Jayawardene will forever be known as one of the greatest players ever, when it comes to spin bowling.

Collingwood to partner Mahela

Jayawardene and collingwood

Alongside Jayawardene, another massively experienced player joins the management stuff. He is none other than England’s own Paul Collingwood. Both Collingwood and Jayawardene will be acting as consultants to the specialist coaches staff of the England cricket team. Seems like the English board are making quite alot of efforts to turn around the 3-0 thumping they endured the last time around when Pakistan hosted them in the UAE. Can Jayawardene’s addition bring some flare to the English batsman against spin bowling?
