Watson to lead Sydney Thunder for new BBL season

Shane Watson, who retired from International cricket in 2015, is set to lead the Sydney Thunder side in the upcoming season of the BBL (Big Beash League). The promotion of Watson as leader of the side comes on the back of Micheal Hussey hanging up his boots earlier this year, as announced by the franchise management on Tuesday.

Hussey led Sydney Thunder to their maiden BBL title last year and has now taken up a role in the management instead. He has been appointed the team’s director of cricket which left the captain’s slot empty.

Watson’s experience in limited overs cricket, particularly in the T20 format, can never be questioned. The veteran allrounder brings with him a truckload of T20 experience having previously led the Australian national T20 team besides leading the now suspended IPL (Indian Premier League) franchise Rajasthan Royals.

“I’m very excited to be chosen as captain of the Sydney Thunder. I’ve got big shoes to fill with Mike Hussey doing an incredible job over the past couple of years. I’m going to have to be at my best to live up to what Mike’s done.

I’ve got my own personality and style on how I like to play T20 cricket from my experiences of playing a lot of T20 cricket. Things won’t change that much but I have my own ideas on how the team can get the best out of themselves against world-class opposition,”

The Men’s Big Bash League 2016-17 will kickoff on December 30 at the Sydney Showground Stadium, where defending Champions Sydney Thunder will take on Sydney Sixers in a crunch derby clash.
