Zimbabwe beat Ireland in thriller

The Zimbabwe Ireland series was always expected to be a an absolute thriller, and that is exactly what the first One Day International game showcased. The home side outlasted a heartbroken Irish team with 2 wickets and 1 over in hand. Chasing a low total of 219, the highlight of hosts innings were the half centuries registered by stars Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza. The pitch was a slow one, one not known to be a high scoring surface.

The batting innings of both the teams saw downfall against spin bowling. But for Zimbabwe, thanks to Sikandar Raza’s unbeaten 60, they got over the line to register a much needed first game win in this promisingly tight series. Raza’s innings was of massive significance also because Zimbabwe had lost their last recognized star batsman in Elton Chigumbura. When Raza arrived on the crease, Zimbabwe were in the 27th over, and all the youngman had got left with him were his tail-end partners. The tail-enders did really well to assist Raza, who played super sensibly and according to what the low Irish total demanded. Raza perfectly orchestrated a close yet memorable win for his side.

The visitors however, can not be written off just yet. The Ireland team is full of potential and on their day can certainly get the better of any team. They would look to bounce back from a disheartening and close first match defeat at the hands of the hosts. The Zimbabwe Ireland series 2015 seems evenly poised at this stage. Much excitement for sure in the buildup to the next game!
