Kings XI Punjab Home Ground: PCA Stadium, Mohali
Kings XI Punjab is our third team on the list after Delhi Daredevils & Gujarat Lions. The South African hard-hitting batsman, David Miller, has been appointed captain of the franchise, taking over from Australian, George Bailey.
In this edition, we will take a look at Punjab’s local & overseas trump-cards who could play a decisive role in their side’s campaign.
Vijay, the stylish opening batsman, will have a major role to play in order to lift his side’s chances of making it to the semis. The opener will need to make use of his experience while performing duties with Chennai and then for Daredevils. The batsman has also appeared for Indian National side in 37 tests & 14 ODI’s, making him as one of the go-to players for the Punjab side.
The 22-year-old batsman has promised a lot during his IPL career until now. He has been a regular member of this Punjab outfit and, his ability to score quickly will ease the pressure on his opening partner, Vijay, in helping his side off to a decent start.
The medium pacer will be playing his first IPL season for Punjab after enjoying a relatively successful stint with his former team, Chennai Super Kings. Mohit spent three seasons with CSK and is a useful bowler with difference pace variations.
The left-arm spinner has been a regular feature of Punjab’s side. His accurate line & length is one of the major weapons. Patel’s ability with the bat also makes him a versatile player for his side. With supporting pitches, the 22-year-old can be a handful to his team’s chances.
Miller hardly needs any introduction. He is a destructive middle order batsman who can strike big at will. Now since he will be leading his franchise, the South African will be expected to bat a little higher then his normal position and help his side, piling up a bigger score.
The Australian has been long associated with this Punjab franchise. He, along with Miller, can score at a rapid pace and can also bowl economically in the middle of the innings. Maxwell’s ability to improvise against both pace & spin, tips him to be one of the most important players in the middle order.
The South African paceman has come a long way and considered amongst top pace bowlers in world cricket these days. Abbott has been at the top of his game recently which has helped him to earn regular place in South Africa’s starting XI. The fast bowler started his IPL career with his present outfit before joining Chennai Super Kings. However, the 28-year-old, has re-united with Punjab and tipped to be earn a place in the starting XI.
The express fast bowler will lead Punjab’s attack this season. He has done no harm to his reputation after retiring from International duties and has worked hard on his fitness to maintain his place with Punjab. Johnson’s ability to bowl at over 90 mph will be a test for young Indian batsman and, at the same time, an asset for David Miller’s side.
Punjab will play their opening game of 2016 campaign against Gujarat Lions on April 11 at Mohali. The team finished last in 2015, but, is expected to do well under a new leader.
